Clean-ups Channelkeeper
conducts periodic beach clean-ups to help keep trash from entering the ocean
and to make our beaches cleaner and more enjoyable for local citizens and
tourists alike. We adopted West Beach as
part of the California Coastal Commission’s Adopt-a-Beach program in 2006. As the adopted parents, we conduct at least
three or four clean-ups at beach each year. Volunteers are always appreciated
to assist in our efforts! Check our
calendar page for the next clean-up event. Coastal Clean-Up Day 2010 is September 25th Our beaches need your help on Saturday, September 25th for the 26th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Please join Channelkeeper in cleaning up West Beach from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Stream Clean-ups Channelkeeper also conducts quarterly stream and river clean-ups through our Adopt-A-Stream program. Individuals, families, or businesses can volunteer to 'adopt' a stretch of stream in their neighborhood and commit to conducting at least four quarterly clean-ups of their adopted stretch each year. Volunteers also help collect valuable water quality data by conducting Rapid Trash Assessment surveys of their adopted site during each clean-up. Rapid Trash Assessment is a protocol developed by the State Water Resources Control Board as a means for citizen monitoring groups to systematically assess trash levels in streams in order to aid the development of water quality protection programs. Our clean-up efforts are focused on Stream Team sites where we have identified a trash problem. However, we are expanding our clean-up efforts to additional creeks, beaches, and watersheds. If you live, work, or walk near a creek or beach that is littered with trash, please let us know by contacting us at penny@sbck.org or calling 805.563.3377 ext. 0. Send us your photos, stories and observations, and we will look forward to cleaning up a creek near you! Don The Glove
